An ANA Holdings Inc. Boeing Co. 787 bound for Tokyo made an emergency return to Kuala Lumpur Monday after receiving a warning that the temperature of the exhaust gas from its right engine was very high.

The pilots of Flight 816 shut down the turbine and landed with the left engine, Kenichi Furukawa, an ANA spokesman, said by phone from Tokyo. All 203 passengers and 11 crew members are safe, said Ryosei Nomura, another spokesman. The company has yet to determine the cause of the warning.

The Dreamliner left Kuala Lumpur airport at 8:10 a.m. local time and returned at 9:27 a.m., with aircraft-tracking website Flightradar24.com showing that it reached about 28,000 feet before turning back. ANA said it’s looking to arrange alternative options for the passengers to fly to Tokyo.

The 787 was fitted with engines from Rolls-Royce Holdings Plc, which said in an e-mailed statement that it’s “working with ANA to provide support and technical assistance.” Boeing said separately that it’s aware of the incident and also working with the airline.

Rolls-powered Dreamliners use the Trent 1000 engine, which together with the Trent XWB deployed on Airbus Group SE’s rival A350 is set to be the biggest growth driver at the company over the next decade.

Maintenance revenue from the models hasn’t yet begun to ratchet up, leaving the U.K. engineer exposed as sales of engines used on offshore vessels are hit by the low oil price just as demand for corporate and regional jets ebbs and some bigger planes it powers reach retirement age.

The 787 entered service in 2011 after more than three years of delays. An emergency landing by an ANA 787 in January 2013 with battery problems prompted U.S. regulators to ground the jet, pulling an entire airplane model out of service.
